Ranking every flavour of Kit Kat I've had + December favs
Kit Kat was so genius for making all these specialty flavours. The sheer profit they have made from semi-adventurous eaters like me is just... massive.
December Rabbit Hole - Specialty Kit Kats
They’re vibrant in colour! They’re a way for Kit Kat to globalize but in a fun way! AND they’re taking over the markets one at a time! Take a break and I’ll ramble about Kit Kats.
I thought it’d be better to talk about my favourite Kit Kats rather than just do a deep dive into the history of these. But here’s the basic rundown of how Kit Kats came to be. It’s 1935 and Rowntree's of York, in the United Kingdom decided to find a convenient way for working men to store chocolate. The result? The birth of Kit Kat.
Acquisition after acquisition, Kit Kat eventually became passed around as the commercialized brand that it is—operated by our favourite bois the Monopolies of Chocolate (or: ‘Chocolate Flavoured’ as in single-digit cacao concentrations) Confectionary.
Timeskip.
Early 2000s, Japan. Kit Kat began launching localized flavour variants. Eventually, it became a cultural phenomenon. And that, my techbros, is how I came to rank all the Kit Kat flavours I’ve had.
My Definitive Kit Kat Ranking (worst to best)
Mint Chocolate - it tastes fake. It’s worse than the original. Enough said.
Mini Kit Kats - it’s the original, but you get less of it. Good for Kit Kat’s own capitalism, not good for my desire for candy.
Tropical Mango - it doesn’t taste good with the chocolate inside. Very good in concept, but usually sourer and fruitier Kit Kats aren’t really my thing.
White Chocolate - I usually love white chocolate a fair bit, but this doesn’t beat the OG. Barely has a chocolatey taste.
Original - old classic, but nothing new. Sometimes too sweet.
Ume - not bad at all, but just tastes a bit strange on the aftertaste element. I think it’s a personal preference thing as I’ve never actually had actual ume.
Peach - it’s okay. As previously said, I don’t feel like fruit-inspired flavours work the best with Kit Kats in most cases.
Sakura - quite good… but overhyped. I feel like the reason so many people talk about this flavour is a sense of exoticism rather than its actual taste.
Matcha - I really like this flavour! You can’t go wrong.
Strawberry - in my opinion, it’s one of the few times that Kit Kat does fruit flavours justice. A great take on a very classical flavour variation.
Double Matcha - matcha but with a stronger flavour and greater subtlety. You can’t go wrong x2.
Milk Tea - you can pretty much tell that I have a strong bias towards tea-inspired flavours. GENUINELY SPEAKING, THIS IS HEAVENLY. IT’S THE KIT KAT TO END ALL KIT KATS. It’s absolutely brilliant for something you can condense into two little budget chocolate wafers.
December Favs
Music - Billy Joel’s The Stranger album. I’m in a very strange oldish music mood. I fell down the Vienna rabbit hole as a senior year burnout person and eventually landed on the whole album. I like listening to this on repeat as I get stuff done.
Shows - Black Mirror + Love, Death, and Robots. I was watching every single sitcom under the sun for the past months but now I’m back in my sci-fi stage.
Books - The Iron Widow. Admittedly I’m not finished reading but I really vibe with non-Eurocentric sci-fi. It’s also very strange so far and turns many tropes around.
Item - Mudkip Plush! Got it from a Secret Santa trade. It brings me joy during these harsh and overwork-prone times. :]
Signing off!
